Agility’s new humanoid robot will stop, squat to avoid harming human coworkers

Agility Robotics has unveiled its latest humanoid robot, Digit 5, specifically engineered to operate safely alongside human workers. Unlike traditional industrial robots that require physical barriers or isolated work cells, Digit 5 features an advanced motion system designed to detect human presence and react accordingly. When the robot identifies a person nearby, it can autonomously adjust its path, stand still, or even squat into a seated position to minimize risk and allow for safe passage. According to Pras Velagapudi, Chief Technology Officer at Agility, the robot utilizes a complex safety protocol that adapts its behavior based on the proximity and nature of human interaction. This development marks a significant shift in robotics, potentially enabling more widespread integration of humanoid machines in warehouses and automotive manufacturing environments without the need for restrictive safety infrastructure.
