Ukraine shoots down bizarre Russian 'ring' drone — after working out it wasn't a UFO

Ukrainian forces from the 414th Birds of Magyar Brigade successfully intercepted and destroyed a unique Russian strike drone, the Knyaz Vladimir Svyatoslavich (KVS), on October 8, 2026. The aircraft, developed by the Ushkuynik research center, features a distinctive circular wing design that initially led operators to humorously mistake it for a UFO. Unlike standard multirotor drones, the KVS utilizes this ring-shaped structure to improve energy efficiency by transitioning from vertical takeoff to aerodynamic horizontal flight. While the KVS is designed for intermediate-range combat missions, the manufacturer is also known for producing the Knyaz Veshchiy Oleg, a reconnaissance drone frequently used for artillery adjustment. Ukrainian military reports indicate that while these specialized platforms are being deployed, they remain vulnerable to interception, with several units of the reconnaissance variant also being downed by various Ukrainian brigades over the past year.
