Toyota plans to deploy 400,000 factory robots while emphasizing human retention

Toyota has announced an ambitious initiative to integrate 400,000 humanoid robots into its manufacturing ecosystem by 2028. The automaker plans to invest $6.42 billion annually to modernize its facilities, with 150,000 units slated for its own automotive plants and 250,000 for group component suppliers. Currently, Toyota is utilizing its ELEY humanoid robots on assembly lines, where human workers actively train the machines to perform complex, precise tasks by using specialized finger-based jigs. Despite the scale of this automation push, Toyota executives maintain that the primary goal is to augment human capabilities rather than replace the workforce. The company emphasizes that the robots are designed to work alongside employees, learning from their expertise to handle repetitive or intricate assembly requirements. This strategic shift represents a significant move toward human-robot collaboration in large-scale industrial manufacturing.
