British Army invests £16 million in 1,000 small drones to enhance battlefield surveillance

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced a £16 million investment to procure over 1,000 small surveillance drones for the British Army. The deal includes 245 FOXE-NATO drones from Evolve Dynamics, 670 Skydio X10 INTL units via Marlborough Communications, and 110 SONORA training drones. These lightweight, portable devices are designed for rapid deployment and enhanced reconnaissance capabilities. Additionally, the MoD is committing £400 million to replace the aging Watchkeeper system with a new fleet of long-endurance Tekever AR5 drones, which have been combat-proven in Ukraine. This procurement strategy aims to modernize battlefield intelligence, support the UK defense industry, and create approximately 1,000 skilled jobs across the country. The initiative reflects a broader shift toward integrating advanced autonomous systems and real-time aerial surveillance into standard military operations to maintain a strategic advantage against emerging threats.
