Researchers build sailboat drone prototype that can 'fly' — we think it's more like falling with style

Engineers at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) have developed ALBATROSS, a 1.1 kg hybrid drone designed for aerial deployment and aquatic navigation. Unlike traditional drones, ALBATROSS does not require powered flight hardware. Instead, it utilizes rigid wingsails to enter a controlled autorotation during descent, which slows its fall and minimizes impact forces upon hitting the water. Once it lands, the drone automatically rights itself and transitions into a wind-propelled sailboat. This design eliminates the need for complex landing gear or aerial propulsion systems, allowing for a range exceeding 100 km. By integrating aerial and marine capabilities without additional mechanical reconfiguration, the prototype offers a lightweight solution for rapid environmental sensing. While promising, the project's success will ultimately depend on the reliability of its autonomous descent, self-righting, and steering mechanisms in real-world conditions.
