Enthusiast becomes first in the world to enable P2P on NVIDIA CMP 90HX GPUs

A hardware researcher has reported successfully bypassing restrictions on NVIDIA CMP series graphics cards, originally designed for mining. The project aimed to configure a server for running large language models (LLMs) on multiple budget-friendly GPUs. The author encountered a limitation where cards could not perform direct peer-to-peer (P2P) data transfers, which is critical for AI performance. While analyzing NVIDIA drivers, the enthusiast discovered debugging mechanisms left behind by the company's engineers, which allowed for the activation of full P2P communication on the CMP 90HX. This achievement enables the use of specialized cards for high-performance computing by providing direct access to the memory of neighboring devices. This case highlights the importance of driver transparency and the potential for modifying proprietary hardware for specific tasks that fall outside the manufacturer's official specifications.
