China is constructing a massive mothership designed for large-scale underwater drones

Satellite imagery from Shanghai's Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard reveals that China is building a significant new naval vessel, estimated at approximately 200 meters in length. Analysts believe this unnamed mothership is specifically designed to carry, launch, and recover extra-extra-large uncrewed underwater vehicles (XXLUUVs). These drones, measuring between 115 and 148 feet, are comparable in size to conventional crewed submarines and possess an estimated range of 10,000 nautical miles. The vessel features a specialized well-deck and internal hangar for maintenance, marking a major advancement in autonomous maritime capabilities. While Beijing has not officially acknowledged the project, experts suggest the ship represents a strategic shift in naval power, allowing for the deployment of large-scale autonomous systems far from shore.
