Bouncy castle linked to MRSA outbreak affecting 48 children in Ireland

A community gathering in Ireland in the fall of 2025 resulted in a significant health incident after a bouncy castle was identified as the source of a multidrug-resistant MRSA outbreak. Approximately 120 people attended the event, which featured three inflatable play structures. Shortly after the festivities, 48 children developed aggressive skin and soft-tissue infections. While 33 children were treated by primary care physicians, 15 required emergency medical attention, and four were hospitalized. Fortunately, all affected children have since recovered. The investigation, recently published in the journal Eurosurveillance, highlights the risks of pathogen transmission on shared recreational equipment. Public health officials emphasize the importance of hygiene and sanitation protocols for inflatable play structures to prevent similar occurrences. The incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly hypervirulent bacteria can spread in communal settings when proper cleaning measures are not strictly maintained.
