X-energy completes main structure of Tennessee nuclear fuel plant

X-energy has reached a significant milestone by completing the main structure of its TX-1 nuclear fuel manufacturing facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This 214,000-square-foot plant is the first commercial-scale advanced nuclear fuel facility built in the United States in over 50 years. Designed to produce TRISO fuel pebbles, the facility will eventually have the capacity to process 5 metric tons of uranium annually, supporting a growing fleet of Xe-100 advanced reactor modules. The project, managed by subsidiary TRISO-X, has already secured a 40-year license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. While interior systems and specialized equipment installation remain, the plant is a critical step toward domestic energy independence and supporting clean energy initiatives for partners like Amazon and Energy Northwest. The company is also expanding its Oak Ridge campus with a new research and development site, TX-L, to further support the demand for advanced reactor fuel.
