Volvo refreshes the 2028 XC40 with design and lighting updates

Volvo has announced a second midlife update for its popular XC40 crossover, aiming to keep the model competitive ahead of a full redesign. Originally launched in 2017 and previously refreshed in 2023, the 2028 model year update focuses on aesthetic refinements and engineering tweaks. Key exterior changes include redesigned matrix LED headlights that maintain the signature "Thor’s Hammer" motif while adopting a more minimalist appearance, alongside updated rear LED clusters. Beyond lighting, Volvo designers have subtly adjusted the vehicle's geometry, shaving off corners to reduce the SUV's overall footprint. Akhil Krishnan, interim lead for the 30 and 40 Series, stated that these enhancements to design, technology, and safety aim to solidify the XC40's status as a top-selling model. The update reflects Volvo's strategy of extending the lifecycle of its established platforms through iterative improvements rather than immediate full-model replacements.
