US startup Rune plans to turn wasted solar energy into GPU-ready data centers

San Francisco-based startup Rune has introduced RELIC, a modular compute unit designed to operate directly at solar power plants. By connecting computing equipment to existing solar infrastructure, Rune aims to utilize the estimated 50 TWh of electricity wasted annually at these sites. The system bypasses the need for grid connections, which often cause significant delays for AI infrastructure projects. Rune claims that RELIC units can be installed in approximately 60 minutes and provide operational GPU capacity within six weeks, significantly faster than traditional data center construction. The technology operates on direct current, avoiding conversion losses and water consumption. Following a $40 million Series A funding round, the company has already deployed its first unit at a 200 MW facility in Texas. This approach offers a scalable solution to the surging power demands of AI by repurposing idle renewable energy assets into efficient, grid-independent computing hubs.
