US Law Enforcement Seizes Domains of Major DDoS-for-Hire Service NightmareStresser

US authorities have seized two domains associated with NightmareStresser, a prominent DDoS-for-hire platform responsible for hundreds of thousands of cyberattacks since 2022. The operation, which replaced the service's websites with an FBI seizure banner, is part of the ongoing international campaign known as Operation PowerOFF. While these "booter" services often market themselves as legitimate stress-testing tools, law enforcement maintains they are primarily used by cybercriminals to disrupt businesses and public organizations. Although the domains nightmare-stresser.com and nightmarestresser.org are now offline, the Department of Justice has not reported any arrests or the dismantling of the underlying botnet infrastructure. Operation PowerOFF has successfully seized over 100 domains and charged 12 individuals to date, signaling a continued effort to hold administrators of illegal DDoS services accountable. Despite this disruption, experts suggest that such platforms often resurface quickly, highlighting the persistent nature of the threat.
