The Future Is Fanless: 100% Heat Capture for Liquid Cooled AI Servers

As AI server rack power densities approach 1 MW, traditional hybrid liquid-air cooling systems are becoming insufficient. According to CoolIT, once a rack exceeds 250 kW, the remaining air-cooled load creates excessive complexity and costs. The industry is shifting toward near-total liquid heat capture, which allows servers to operate without fans by moving heat away from processors, memory, and networking components directly into liquid loops. This transition is driven by the rising thermal design power (TDP) of modern AI hardware, which now impacts peripheral components that previously relied on air cooling. CoolIT utilizes modular coldplate technology to manage these diverse thermal requirements, aiming to make fanless, high-density server designs the standard for flagship rack-scale products through 2028. By reducing air cooling to less than 1 percent of the total load, data centers can achieve greater efficiency and reliability as they scale to meet the demands of next-generation computing.
