Stop bringing your phone in the shower: How steam can ruin 'waterproof' phones

Many smartphone users mistakenly believe that an IP68 rating makes their device invincible to all forms of moisture. However, manufacturers explicitly warn against exposing phones to steam, such as taking them into the shower. While liquid water is blocked by seals, steam consists of tiny water vapor molecules that can easily penetrate these protective barriers. Once inside, the vapor can condense into liquid water, leading to internal corrosion, short circuits, and permanent hardware damage. Furthermore, the heat from a hot shower can degrade the adhesive seals that keep the device waterproof in the first place. Experts advise keeping phones away from humid environments entirely to maintain the integrity of the device. Even if a phone is marketed as water-resistant, it is not designed to withstand high-temperature steam, and such damage is rarely covered under standard manufacturer warranties.
