Sony updates its generation-defining headphones for the replaceable-battery era: meet the WH-1000XM4C

Sony has introduced the WH-1000XM4C, a mid-range update to its iconic noise-canceling headphones. While retaining the design and core audio performance of the original XM4, the new model features updated sound tuning for clearer vocals and tighter bass, alongside a 10-band EQ and Quick Access features. The most significant change is the integration of a user-replaceable battery, ensuring compliance with new European legislation. This design shift results in a slight reduction in battery life, dropping from 30 to 27 hours with active noise cancellation enabled. Alongside the XM4C, Sony also unveiled the entry-level WH-CH730N and WH-CH530N models. Priced at approximately £219, the XM4C aims to keep the popular XM4 design relevant for a new era of sustainable consumer electronics, offering a balance between legacy performance and modern regulatory requirements.
