Small businesses that adopt AI are more optimistic about growth, revenue, and employment

A recent study by the New York Federal Reserve Bank highlights a significant divide between AI-adopting small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and their non-adopting counterparts. The research reveals that 46% of US SMBs have already integrated AI, with adopters expressing significantly higher optimism regarding future hiring and revenue growth. Notably, adopters reported a 33 percentage point net expectation for employment growth, more than double that of non-adopters. Despite these positive outlooks, the practical impact remains in early stages; only 31% of adopters have reported actual sales increases, and many are still experimenting with the technology. Importantly, the study found that 77% of businesses saw no change in labor costs, suggesting that AI is currently serving as a tool to assist existing employees rather than a replacement for human labor. Researchers conclude that AI is likely helping small businesses overcome operational constraints that previously hindered their growth.
