Rolls-Royce secures deal for ŠKODA-made hardware to drive the next generation of nuclear power stations

Rolls-Royce has entered into a strategic partnership with Czech-based ŠKODA JS to supply critical safety hardware for its upcoming small modular reactors (SMRs). Under the agreement, ŠKODA JS will design and manufacture Control Rod Drive Mechanisms (CRDMs), which are essential for regulating reactor output and ensuring safety. The Rolls-Royce SMR, capable of generating 470 MW of energy, is positioned as a low-carbon, efficient alternative to traditional large-scale nuclear plants. This deal, valued at approximately £35 million per reactor, follows a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at expanding nuclear infrastructure in the Czech Republic. As Rolls-Royce targets global exports and significant job creation by 2050, the collaboration leverages ŠKODA JS’s decades of nuclear engineering expertise. The partnership highlights the growing importance of modular nuclear technology in the global energy transition, providing scalable and reliable power solutions for industrial and national grids.
