OpenAI Targets Argentina's Patagonia for $25 Billion Stargate AI Data Center

OpenAI is reportedly exploring the Patagonia region of Argentina as a strategic location for a massive 500MW AI data center project, dubbed Stargate. The initiative aims to leverage the region's naturally cold climate for efficient cooling and access to clean energy sources, including wind and shale gas from the Vaca Muerta formation. While OpenAI has signed a letter of intent with Sur Energy, progress remains slow due to significant infrastructure hurdles, particularly the lack of robust fiber-optic connectivity required for modern cloud operations. Furthermore, the project faces potential social and environmental challenges, including opposition from local Mapuche Indigenous communities and political uncertainty. Other major tech giants, including Google and Apple, are also reportedly eyeing the region to bypass the growing resistance to data center development in the United States. Despite the appeal of Argentina's investor-friendly RIGI incentives, the path to operationalizing these massive server farms remains complex.
