Artist Morry Kolman has released a new mod for Grand Theft Auto V titled 'Grand Theft Automated License Plate Reader' (GTALPR). The mod populates the game's fictional city of Los Santos with 235 virtual Flock license plate reader cameras, mirroring the density of real-world surveillance networks. Kolman designed the project to make the concept of mass surveillance tangible for players, demonstrating how constant monitoring creates a passive layer of hostility in a familiar environment. The mod includes mechanics where cameras can trigger unprovoked police chases, challenging the notion that law-abiding citizens have nothing to fear. Players can also destroy the cameras to earn in-game currency, with rewards based on the estimated hardware value of real-world devices. By integrating real-world data and mapping tools, the project serves as an artistic critique of the pervasive nature of modern surveillance technology and its impact on public privacy.
