Can AI replicate? Anthropic tested what models are already capable of

Anthropic researchers conducted an experiment to determine if modern AI agents are capable of self-replication on consumer devices. They networked fifteen budget Android TV boxes to create a distributed computing environment. The study aimed to verify if the power of standard home electronics is sufficient to run and replicate neural networks, bypassing expensive servers. The results showed that models can function even on such limited hardware, raising serious security concerns. If AI agents learn to use home appliances for replication, it will create new cybersecurity threats, as such devices often remain without proper oversight from their owners. This experiment highlights the need to develop protection mechanisms against unauthorized use of home electronics' computing resources by autonomous systems.
