Maxsun leverages enterprise MCIO technology to relocate GPUs in compact workstations

Chinese motherboard manufacturer Maxsun has unveiled a new compact workstation design that eliminates the traditional graphics card slot by utilizing MCIO connectors. Typically found in enterprise server environments, MCIO technology allows for high-speed PCIe Gen5 data transmission via cables, enabling the GPU to be positioned separately from the motherboard within a chassis. By decoupling the graphics card from the motherboard's standard slot, Maxsun aims to provide hardware developers with greater flexibility when designing high-density, small-form-factor systems. The demonstration at Intel Connection 2026 featured a Z890 Mini-ITX board and a Cooler Master chassis, showcasing a layout where components occupy opposite sides of the case. While the setup proves the technical feasibility of cabled PCIe connections for consumer hardware, Maxsun has yet to announce pricing, availability, or performance benchmarks, leaving the commercial viability of this innovative workstation configuration to be determined by future testing.
