Judge allows most of Reddit's lawsuit against Anthropic to proceed

A San Francisco Superior Court judge has ruled that Reddit's lawsuit against AI company Anthropic can largely move forward. The case centers on allegations that Anthropic illegally scraped Reddit user comments to train its Claude chatbot without authorization. Judge Harold Kahn overruled Anthropic's demurrer, allowing claims regarding breach of contract, interference with contract, and violations of California's unfair competition law to proceed. While the judge dismissed claims of unjust enrichment and trespass to chattels, he granted Reddit the opportunity to refile them with greater specificity by October 16. Crucially, the court rejected Anthropic's argument that Reddit’s terms of service were unenforceable, noting evidence that Anthropic continued scraping despite public warnings. Reddit maintains that AI companies must respect licensing agreements and user privacy, while Anthropic has yet to provide a formal response to the ruling.
