Interpol uses AI to identify 126 terrorists by analyzing over 100,000 images

Interpol has successfully identified 126 suspected foreign terrorist fighters through Operation Shams II, a project that utilized artificial intelligence to process massive volumes of jihadist propaganda. By employing AI agents and automated scripts, the agency analyzed 108,076 images, effectively removing duplicates and low-quality content. This process reduced the dataset to 6,362 unique, high-quality images, which were then processed by Interpol’s Facial Recognition System (IFRS). This automated approach eliminated 94% of the manual workload, allowing investigators to focus on actionable leads. While Interpol has not disclosed the specific AI models or vendors involved, the operation highlights the increasing efficiency of AI in law enforcement.
