Huawei Ascend 960 SuperPoD Aims to Surpass Nvidia AI Hardware in China

Huawei is scaling its Ascend 960 platform to compete with Nvidia in the high-performance AI market. The company’s new Atlas 960 SuperPoD roadmap features systems with up to 15,488 processors, designed to handle AI models with 10 trillion parameters. A key component of this strategy is the upgraded UnifiedBus interconnect, which facilitates high-speed communication between thousands of NPUs. By integrating Hi-ONE optical technology and near-packaged optics, Huawei aims to reduce communication bottlenecks and power consumption significantly. The Atlas 960E variant, which links 4,096 NPUs, serves as a cornerstone for these massive clusters. Huawei plans to maintain a rapid development cycle, with new iterations like the 960DT and 960PR expected by 2027, followed by the Ascend 970 and 980 series in 2028 and 2029. This aggressive expansion highlights Huawei's commitment to overcoming hardware limitations through massive parallel processing and advanced interconnect architecture.
