Google AI Overviews: Why Fan-Out Coverage Is a Strong Citation Signal

New research from Surfer SEO suggests that pages ranking for both a primary search query and related 'fan-out' queries are significantly more likely to be cited in Google AI Overviews. Analyzing over 170,000 URLs, the study found that 51.2% of cited pages successfully covered both main and secondary related topics. While the data shows a strong 0.77 correlation, researchers caution that this is not direct causation, but rather a signal of topical authority. Notably, nearly 68% of cited sources did not rank in the top 10 for their primary keywords, indicating that AI Overviews prioritize comprehensive content over traditional search rankings. The report advises content teams to use fan-out analysis to identify and fill information gaps, focusing on building deep topical authority rather than simply stuffing keywords, thereby improving the likelihood of being featured in AI-generated search results.
