The tool calculates the estimated water consumption and electricity usage associated with individual prompts by leveraging peer-reviewed research from institutions like UC Riverside and Hugging Face. EcoPrompt categorizes AI models into tiers—ranging from lightweight models to intensive image generation—to help users understand the physical footprint of their digital requests. Built with a focus on privacy, the extension operates entirely client-side with zero telemetry and no external API dependencies. By providing unobtrusive metrics, the developer aims to encourage more sustainable prompting habits, such as batching queries or selecting appropriately sized models for specific tasks.
