AMD acquires World Labs AI startup, upping the ante against Nvidia

Chipmaker AMD has announced a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs, an AI startup specializing in world models, for $8.2 billion. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year, subject to regulatory approval. Founded in 2024 by renowned computer vision scientist Fei-Fei Li alongside researchers Justin Johnson, Christoph Lassner, and Ben Mildenhall, World Labs focuses on developing AI models capable of predictive physical world simulations. The startup previously secured $230 million in funding, with AMD participating as an early investor. By integrating World Labs' expertise in spatial intelligence and predictive modeling, AMD aims to strengthen its competitive position against Nvidia in the rapidly evolving AI infrastructure market.
