Amazon to launch Ring ‘neighbourhood watch’ app in UK amid US privacy fears

Amazon is expanding its Ring ecosystem in the UK by launching the 'Neighbours' app, a community-focused platform designed to replace informal local groups like WhatsApp. Available from October 21, the app allows users to share safety updates and report lost pets within a defined radius. While the service aims to foster local connection, it has faced scrutiny due to its history in the US, particularly regarding police access to camera footage. Amazon stated that controversial features, such as law enforcement requests for video, will not be immediately available in the UK. The platform will utilize AI and human moderation to ensure content quality. To address ongoing privacy concerns, Amazon also highlighted its new 'TAKE' encryption, which limits company and third-party access to camera recordings to 24 hours unless the user explicitly grants further permission.
