3D-printed airless wheels could be a game changer for Ukraine's ground robotic vehicles

Ukrainian engineers have successfully developed and tested 3D-printed, airless wheels designed for unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) operating on the front lines. Created by a collaboration between Print&Live UA and iSCALE 3D, these inflation-free tires aim to solve the critical issue of mobility loss caused by punctures, blast effects, or harsh terrain. By utilizing a digitally adaptable lattice structure made from durable elastomers and composite polymers, the wheels maintain structural integrity without internal air pressure. The design is significantly lighter than many foreign alternatives, weighing between 32 and 56 kg, and features a two-piece rim system that allows for field repairs without specialized machinery. Beyond durability, the wheels are intended to reduce rolling resistance and energy consumption, potentially extending the operational range of robotic platforms by up to 30%. With development complete, the wheels are now entering limited production for deployment to combat units.
